Detailed introduction
The Helicopter Approach Path Indicator HAPI Light is a vital component in aviation, specifically designed to assist helicopter pilots during the critical phase of approach for landing. This compact lighting system serves to enhance safety and precision in helicopter operations by providing visual guidance regarding the correct approach angle to a heliport or landing zone.
Comprising a series of lights arranged along the approach path, the HAPI Light emits distinct colors, typically red and white, to convey essential information to the approaching pilot. These colors indicate whether the helicopter is too high, too low, or maintaining the correct glide path. By interpreting these color combinations in real-time, pilots can make necessary adjustments to their approach angle, ensuring a safe and controlled landing.
The HAPI Light's guidance is particularly invaluable during adverse weather conditions or scenarios with low visibility, where visual cues become limited. Its ability to offer accurate and consistent guidance regardless of environmental factors enhances situational awareness and reduces the risk of controlled flight into terrain (CFIT) accidents, a significant concern in helicopter operations.
Moreover, the HAPI Light is engineered for easy installation and maintenance, making it a cost-effective solution for heliport operators and aviation authorities alike. Its intuitive design and effectiveness in improving landing safety have led to its widespread adoption as a standard feature in many heliports and landing zones worldwide.
In conclusion, the Helicopter Approach Path Indicator (HAPI) Light plays a crucial role in enhancing the safety and efficiency of helicopter landings. By providing clear visual guidance to pilots during the approach phase, the HAPI Light helps mitigate risks and ensures precise and safe landings in various operational conditions.
Overview:
The Helicopter Approach Path Indicator HAPI System allows the pilot to have the necessary visual information to place the helicopter on the ideal approach slope and can be used by day or night.
The HAPI system can be used by all helicopter as soon as it is set up since it does not require any airborne instrumentation. In compliance with ICAO requirements the Helicopter Approach Path Indicator HAPI must be located adjacent to the nominal aiming point and aligned in azimuth with the preferred approach direction.
The angle of elevation setting of HAPI must be such that during approach the pilot of the helicopter observing the upper boundary of the “Below Slope” sector (Fix Red) clear all objects in the approach area by a safe margin.
The Helicopter Approach Path Indicator HAPI System which emit in elevation four distinct types of light :
1. Flashing Green Light = Helicopter above the optimal approach slope optimum (too high).
2. Fix Green Light = Helicopter on the slope.
3. Fix Red Light = Helicopter slightly below the optimal slope (slightly too low).
4. Flashing Red Light = Helicopter below the optimal slope (too low).
